Thanks also to my teachers, Hart DeFouw and his guru Mantrji, without whom I&#8217;d never have seen the light of the <em>jyotir vidya<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>My Jyotish Practice<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I remember my first reading from a Vedic astrologer. He said I had the chart of an astrologer but not a classic <em>jyotishi<\/em>. I think it was a bit of a backhand comment, but I didn\u00e2\u0080\u0099t mind. I\u00e2\u0080\u0099ve always been a straddler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I discovered western astrology at age 25 and began studies with the British Faculty of Astrological Studies when I was 27. Three years later I started giving readings and teaching. Western astrology served me well for almost 15 years, until I started doubting its ability to deliver. I thought I was smart, had earned professional accreditation, and put great energy into my work. Why couldn\u00e2\u0080\u0099t I predict more accurately?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Hart.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1952\" title=\"Hart\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Hart-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/span><\/a>Shortly thereafter, I discovered Vedic astrology. I repeated the learning cycle \u00e2\u0080\u0093 a few years studying on my own, more than a decade with Hart DeFouw, and ACVA accreditation. Finally I had new skills to offer my clients, sharper readings and better predictions. Over the years, I\u00e2\u0080\u0099ve developed a routine that works for me:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Calculate the birth chart and rectify as required<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I rectify every chart whose birth time appears approximate. I use major life events, eg, immigration, marriage, house purchase, birth of children, death of parents, etc, to see if planetary periods and transits make sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I may ask the client for numbers, eg, 1-12 for an ascendant, 1-108 for the <em>navamsa<\/em> <em>lagna<\/em>, or 1-249 for the KP sub of an ascendant. Or I pick up a book to note the first page number I see, then expunge multiples of 12, 108 or 249 to get into the range I need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Occasionally, I pluck random numbers from the ether. This doesn\u00e2\u0080\u0099t require extraterrestrial intelligence, just an internet connection. Random.org has a module that generates random numbers from atmospheric noise. For an astrologer, what could be more appropriate?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Often I use Krishnamurti\u00e2\u0080\u0099s system of ruling planets, comparing a <em>prashna<\/em> with the hypothetical birth chart to determine the rising sign, star or sub.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1953\" title=\"sarpa\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/sarpa.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"108\" height=\"108\" \/><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Numerology<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Using a system of correspondence that translates each letter into a single-digit number, I convert the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s name to a single-digit number. In some cases, I\u00e2\u0080\u0099ll find it corroborates a rectified chart. Other times, it simply highlights a planet that I may choose to consider topical in today\u00e2\u0080\u0099s session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 13px;\">Analyse the chart from a static point of view<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I note all planetary strengths and weaknesses. I review a few dozen yogas in my head and note those present. I look for themes that emerge by way of house lordships and positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I use one set of techniques to assess relationship patterns, and another set to determine career direction. If I can successfully address these two issues, I\u00e2\u0080\u0099ll typically satisfy 80% of my clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although the <em>rashi<\/em> chart is my benchmark, I also use KP\u00e2\u0080\u0099s unequal house system (Placidus), with which many western astrologers are familiar. As house cusps shift, the KP chart sometimes reveals themes different from the <em>rashi<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Analyse the chart from a dynamic point of view<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I note the <em>dasha<\/em> sequence to see what yogas are activated. I examine whether <em>dasha<\/em> lords figure prominently in any major chart themes. Generally, this gives me the broad swoop of the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I study the current <em>bhukti<\/em> and those following for at least seven years. I follow Jupiter and Saturn transits to identify success or difficulty in various life departments over the same time span.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Again, the major focus for <em>dasha\/bhukti<\/em> analysis is the <em>rashi<\/em> chart, but I often compare the KP chart to see if it corroborates or says something different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Chart-V.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1956\" title=\"Chart-V\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Chart-V-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Chart-V-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Chart-V.jpg 190w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/><\/span><\/a>Analyse secondary charts<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I use about a dozen <em>amshas<\/em> to drill down into whatever departments of life the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s expressed an interest in, or I think pertinent to their stage in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I do a lot of compatibility work, and often prepare the chart of a \u00e2\u0080\u009csignificant other\u00e2\u0080\u009d in the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s life. Often I don\u00e2\u0080\u0099t have their birth time, maybe not even their birth place. In that case, I apply local time and place to their birth dates. Although this might seem like serendipity, I trust in nature\u00e2\u0080\u0099s willingness to cough up useful information. Some of my most insightful \u00e2\u0080\u009cquickie\u00e2\u0080\u009d readings have been based on this technique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Answer the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s questions<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Prior to their reading I solicit issues of concern, or specific questions the client wants addressed. In the preparation phase, I use various techniques to develop answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This entails both static and dynamic assessment. Questions regarding marriage or having children, for example, are really two-fold. At the static level, the answer is yes or no. At the dynamic level, it\u00e2\u0080\u0099s a question of predicting when it may happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although I\u00e2\u0080\u0099ve been lucky, I\u00e2\u0080\u0099m not perfect. I try to get it right within a year or so by using <em>bhukti<\/em> analysis, or when transits seem to line up, sometimes within a month or less.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My teacher\u00e2\u0080\u0099s guru used to say, <em>Predicting a person\u00e2\u0080\u0099s future is God\u00e2\u0080\u0099s work, and He guards his work jealously<\/em>. If it were easy, everybody would be doing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Prepare a prashna chart<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before the client arrives, I prepare a <em>prashna<\/em> chart for the appointment time and note the Moon\u00e2\u0080\u0099s star-lord. I examine that same planet in the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s chart. Whatever it signifies, the client will have that subject in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A second step in this same technique involves the Moon\u00e2\u0080\u0099s sub-lord in the <em>prashna<\/em> chart. I likewise study that planet too for its significations in the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s chart. Overlaps in particular offer clues to what\u00e2\u0080\u0099s topical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/think-orbit.bmp\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1958\" title=\"think-orbit\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/think-orbit.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"137\" height=\"126\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/em><\/strong><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Attitude<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Before the reading, I take a few minutes to get into an appropriate mental state. Depending on how much time is available, that may involve deep breathing, giving thanks to my teachers, saying a mantra and\/or meditating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Physiognomy<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the client arrives, I give them a few minutes to settle in as we have an introductory chat. I try to assess their ayurvedic type, whether <em>vata<\/em>, <em>pitta<\/em> or <em>kapha<\/em>. Although I already have an opinion of their primary <em>doshas<\/em> based on their chart, this is my reality check.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I observe body language. I note what part of their body they might touch first, or frequently. Every part of the body, or face for that matter, correlates to a sign, perhaps triggering an association with lifelong or topical issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Palmistry<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/palm_sketch_3.bmp\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1961\" title=\"palm_sketch_3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/palm_sketch_3.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"177\" \/><\/span><\/a>I examine the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s hands and spend half an hour discussing what palmistry says about them. This is when I really make contact with the client, literally and psychologically. Although I don\u00e2\u0080\u0099t consider palmistry my forte, I\u00e2\u0080\u0099m constantly surprised by the positive feedback from clients. Thus the hand becomes a benchmark to which I may refer later in the consultation, whether discussing relationships, career, health or other issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">The chart reading<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the next half hour, I provide a static interpretation of the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s chart, covering whatever\u00e2\u0080\u0099s dominant, interesting, topical or suitable to discuss. On the latter note, I never predict anyone\u00e2\u0080\u0099s death unless specifically requested, and then only if there are very good reasons to do so. My focus is typically relationships and career, and then general health, family, finances, and creative or spiritual pursuits as relevant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the last half hour, I cover the dynamic aspect of the chart. I describe how <em>dashas<\/em> and <em>bhuktis<\/em> set the stage for certain trends to develop, and how Jupiter and Saturn provide triggers for events. Here\u00e2\u0080\u0099s where I use more KP, looking for activation of things through <em>dasha<\/em>, <em>bhukti<\/em> and transits, right down to Sun and Moon if I feel emboldened to get that specific.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Q&amp;A wrap-up<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In whatever time remains, or I choose to take, I tie up loose ends. If I haven\u00e2\u0080\u0099t already answered the client\u00e2\u0080\u0099s questions, I\u00e2\u0080\u0099ll cover them now, or deal with questions just arising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many questions aren\u00e2\u0080\u0099t easy to answer via the birth chart or its <em>amshas<\/em>. In such cases, I\u00e2\u0080\u0099ll use the <em>prashna<\/em> chart to provide answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If the client has many questions, and I have time to indulge, I may play spin-the-chart. For example, when they ask a question, I ask for a number. Whatever they give me, I expunge multiples of 12 and reduce it to the zodiacal range. So if they say 32, I can toss off 24 and call it 8.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I then rotate the <em>prashna<\/em> chart to place Scorpio in the ascendant and answer their question based on that resulting chart. And so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Alan-Varanasi-@-50%.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1962\" title=\"Alan Varanasi @ 50%\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Alan-Varanasi-@-50%-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/span><\/a>The five-trick pony<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a western astrologer, I practiced only astrology. But in Hart\u00e2\u0080\u0099s many classes \u00e2\u0080\u0093 on <em>jyotish<\/em>, <em>hasta<\/em>, <em>ayurveda<\/em>, <em>vastu<\/em>, etc \u00e2\u0080\u0093 I often heard him say, &#8220;Don\u00e2\u0080\u0099t be a one-trick pony,&#8221; by which he meant, don\u00e2\u0080\u0099t depend on one technique alone. So I\u00e2\u0080\u0099ve taken that advice to heart, and try to apply it in all of my client readings.
