As a man who tried to unite humankind through faith and love.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For a boxer, a heavyweight fighter in the most brutal of sports, this last statement seems ironic, and yet Ali\u00e2\u0080\u0099s life was full of ironies. It was perhaps his genius that he transcended so many of them, for both our entertainment and enlightenment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muhammad Ali was born as Cassius Clay. The elder of two sons, he was raised as a Baptist in a middle-class neighborhood, his father a mural painter, his mother a domestic, his great-grandfather an Irishman who\u00e2\u0080\u0099d married a black girl. School never interested him, but when his bicycle was stolen, a policeman taught him how to box to defend what was his, and Ali found his destiny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Birth data (courtesy Astro-Databank): 17 January 1942, at 6:35 PM in Louisville, Kentucky. This is a classic signature of a fighter or warrior of the <em>kshatriya<\/em> class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Moon\/Venus conjunction in the 7th forms <em>Raja Yoga<\/em> via 1st and 4th lords, and <em>Dhana Yoga<\/em> via 1st and 11th lords. However, Ali\u00e2\u0080\u0099s <em>lagnesh<\/em> Moon is dark and therefore weak. Although Ali had a massive public following and generated major earnings as a prizefighter, for several years he was vilified for his political views, and stripped of his boxing license in his peak earning years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Mars\/Saturn conjunction in the 10th forms <em>Raja Yoga<\/em> via 5th and 7th lords. Saturn is retrograde, but its debilitation complicates the yoga. Although Ali won the heavyweight boxing title, he was subsequently stripped of it, and later obliged to win it back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Moon\/Sun conjunction forms another <em>Dhana Yoga<\/em> via 1st and 2nd lords, again diminished somewhat by the weak Moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Policeman-and-mentor-Joe-Martin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2855\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Policeman-and-mentor-Joe-Martin-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Policeman-and-mentor-Joe-Martin\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>The Sun\/Mercury conjunction forms <em>Budhaditya Yoga<\/em>. Although Ali did poorly in school and later confessed he should have applied himself more, he had a native wit and a facility for \u00e2\u0080\u009ctrash talk\u00e2\u0080\u009d that delighted his fans and infuriated his opponents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Four planets \u00e2\u0080\u0093 Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus \u00e2\u0080\u0093 form <em>Pravrajya Yoga<\/em>. Typically considered a spiritual yoga, its 7th house cluster is perhaps what made Ali an emissary \u00e2\u0080\u0093 of America, of Islam, of boxing itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His fully-qualified <em>Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga<\/em> defies the odds. Many a debilitated planet finds relief through one or more stabilizing factors, but rarely do we see all four sources of relief come to its rescue:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The debilitated planet (Saturn) must be associated with or aspected by its dispositor (Mars.) Check: Mars is in Aries with Saturn.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The dispositor (Mars) of the debilitated planet (Saturn) must occupy a <em>kendra<\/em>. Check: Mars is in the 10th.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the sign (Aries) in which the planet (Saturn) is debilitated, the planet (Sun) that gets exalted in that same sign (Aries) should be in a <em>kendra<\/em>. Check: the Sun occupies the 7th.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the sign (Libra) in which the debilitated planet (Saturn) is exalted, its lord (Venus) must be in a <em>kendra<\/em>. Check: Venus is in the 7th.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reinforcing the strength of that <em>Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga<\/em>, note that all four conditions above occur from both the <em>lagna<\/em> and <em>chandralagna<\/em>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Much of Ali\u00e2\u0080\u0099s life is mirrored in the strengths and weaknesses of his chart. First, he was a fighter. His powerful Mars in the 10th aspects both the ascendant (body &amp; persona), and its own sign Scorpio in the 5th (mental qualities, showmanship). It\u00e2\u0080\u0099s also in <em>kendras<\/em> from both the Sun and Moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Floatlikeabutterfly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2858 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Floatlikeabutterfly-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Float+like+a+butterfly\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>As a boxer, he was known for his superior hand speed, superb reflexes and constant movement. He was in perpetual motion, doing the \u00e2\u0080\u009cAli shuffle\u00e2\u0080\u009d and dancing around the ring, making his opponents look like fools as they ran after him, throwing wild punches in hopes of connecting. Former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson said, \u00e2\u0080\u009cIt\u00e2\u0080\u0099s very hard to hit a moving target, and [Ali] moved all the time, with such grace, three minutes of every round for 15 rounds. He never stopped. It was extraordinary.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yet when he stood his ground, his fists seemed to come out of nowhere with blinding speed, often in a killer combination, of which he had several. Holding his hands low, he\u00e2\u0080\u0099d lash out with a quick, cutting left jab from an unpredictable angle, sometimes three to five rapid-fire jabs at his opponents\u00e2\u0080\u0099 eyes to create a blur in his face so he wouldn\u00e2\u0080\u0099t see the right hand coming behind it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No matter what his opponents heard about Ali, they didn\u00e2\u0080\u0099t realize how fast he was until they got in the ring with him. And then they never forgot it. His punches produced approximately 1,000\u00c2\u00a0pounds of force. As one fighter said, \u00e2\u0080\u009cYou didn\u00e2\u0080\u0099t realize how much they hurt you until it was too late.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His Mars\/Saturn conjunction is itself a symbol of brute-force physics: momentum versus inertia. Ali was able to take incredible punishment, and he could deal it out, sometimes accused of inflicting cruelty upon his opponents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the <em>Rumble in the Jungle<\/em> fight with George Foreman, Ali violated all conventional boxing wisdom by retreating to the ropes \u00e2\u0080\u0093 the now-infamous \u00e2\u0080\u009cDope-a-Rope\u00e2\u0080\u009d strategy \u00e2\u0080\u0093 and allowed his opponent to pummel him at will, meanwhile covering up, clinching and counter-punching as he verbally taunted Foreman. Reflecting on the fight, Foreman later said, \u00e2\u0080\u009cI thought Ali was just one more knockout victim until, about the seventh round, I hit him hard to the jaw and he held me and whispered in my ear: \u00e2\u0080\u0098<em>That all you got, George?<\/em>\u00e2\u0080\u0099 I realized then that this ain\u00e2\u0080\u0099t what I thought it was.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/muhammad-ali.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2859\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/muhammad-ali-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"muhammad-ali\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>In the <em>Thrilla in Manila<\/em> fight with Joe Frazier, Ali again used the Rope-a-Dope strategy, absorbing relentless punishment from Frazier for the first 11 rounds, after which he went on the attack and conducted \u00e2\u0080\u009ctarget practice\u00e2\u0080\u009d on Frazier\u00e2\u0080\u0099s head. After the 14th round, Frazier\u00e2\u0080\u0099s coach refused to let his half-blinded fighter continue, and Ali was declared winner by technical knockout. Later, Frazier said of the fight, \u00e2\u0080\u009cMan, I hit him with punches that would bring down the walls of a city.\u00e2\u0080\u009d And Ali, who\u00e2\u0080\u0099d also been on the verge of throwing in the towel, conceded, \u00e2\u0080\u009cIt was like death. The closest thing to dying that I know.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Doesn\u00e2\u0080\u0099t that sound like a Mars\/Saturn conjunction? Nobody wins that war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Aside from his fists, Ali also had a wicked mouth, and developed a highly-aggressive form of \u00e2\u0080\u009ctrash talk\u00e2\u0080\u009d to goad and humiliate his opponents. Sonny Liston, whom he challenged for his first heavyweight championship, had a criminal past and mob connections, but Ali dubbed him \u00e2\u0080\u009cthe big ugly bear\u00e2\u0080\u009d. Ali said, \u00e2\u0080\u009cListon even smells like a bear. After I beat him I\u00e2\u0080\u0099m going to donate him to the zoo.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ernie Terrell annoyed Ali by calling him Cassius Clay, which Ali considered his \u00e2\u0080\u009cslave name.\u00e2\u0080\u009d In the ring he taunted Terrell with every punch, saying, \u00e2\u0080\u009cWhat\u00e2\u0080\u0099s my name, Uncle Tom? What\u00e2\u0080\u0099s my name?\u00e2\u0080\u009d Having admitted pre-fight that he wanted to torture Terrell, that a clean knockout was too good for him, Ali made good on his threat. Despite dominating the fight for the second half, he dragged it out to the full 15 rounds. One sportscaster later said, \u00e2\u0080\u009cIt was a wonderful demonstration of boxing skill and a barbarous display of cruelty.\u00e2\u0080\u009d \u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When he fought Joe Frazier, Ali called him the son of a sharecropper, and a \u00e2\u0080\u009cdumb tool of the white establishment.\u00e2\u0080\u009d He said, \u00e2\u0080\u009cFrazier is too ugly, and too dumb, to be champ.\u00e2\u0080\u009d He called him a gorilla, and brandished a rubber ape in his face. In one pre-fight interview, Ali threw so many taunts at Frazier that the other fighter jumped him on camera and wrestled him to the floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although Ali went on to defeat Frazier in Manila, sports analysts said the fight was so brutal that it ruined both men. Frazier would forever talk thereafter with pride about how he\u00e2\u0080\u0099d contributed to Ali\u00e2\u0080\u0099s Parkinson\u00e2\u0080\u0099s Disease, and he probably did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/dont-count-days.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2860\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/dont-count-days-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"dont-count-days\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Although a born fighter, Ali was also an admirable proponent of his adopted Islamic faith, a true <em>jihadist<\/em>. The gross (<em>shtoola<\/em>) form of jihad is war with others; the subtle (<em>sookshma<\/em>) form is war with the demons inside oneself. Although he became a face of America in the world, he knew all too well that America had its own demons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <em>Pravrajya Yoga<\/em> has an influence here; the yoga is spiritual but the 7th house invokes confrontation and cooperation. He became an ambassador of three things \u00e2\u0080\u0093 American civil rights, boxing, and Islam \u00e2\u0080\u0093 to all of which he did credit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Mars\/Saturn conjunction also plays a role in this war of principles. The powerful Mars works for its star-lord Ketu, unaspected in the 8th house. Here Ketu in turn acts for its star-lord Saturn, and we are back to this on-and-off (MA\/SA) counterpunching with respect to the 10th house of career, and the 8th of trauma and reversal. These became themes in Ali\u00e2\u0080\u0099s life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although debilitated, retrograde Saturn aspects its own house, the 7th, place of relationships \u00e2\u0080\u0093 sexual, social, business and war. Thus it played out in conflicted marriages, prize fights and a form of international diplomacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saturn is in the <em>nakshatra<\/em> of the Sun, for whom it works. The Sun is <em>atma<\/em>, the soul. Saturn is <em>sadhana<\/em>, the self-sacrifice and duty. Sun in the 7th invokes <em>Dhana<\/em>, <em>Budhaditya<\/em> and <em>Pravrajya yogas<\/em>, giving wealth, intelligence and a spiritual soul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Spiritual aspects of Ali\u00e2\u0080\u0099s life included his Baptist upbringing, his early (age 18) conversion to Islam, his friendship with spiritual and political mentor Malcolm X, and his affiliation with Elijah Muhamnmad, leader of America\u00e2\u0080\u0099s <em>Nation of Islam<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Marriage was also a battlefield for Ali. Four planets in the 7th house, four marriages. The 7th lord Saturn is debilitated and associated with a powerful Mars. Ali had a cavalier attitude toward women and believed they should be punished if they disobeyed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Saturn\u00e2\u0080\u0099s aspect on both the Moon and Venus are \u00e2\u0080\u009cpassion combos,\u00e2\u0080\u009d as Hart deFouw calls them, the libidinous nature of <em>Shani<\/em> pressing upon the <em>manas<\/em> and the senses, the aesthetics and the urge to merge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Venus in the 7th is <em>karako bhavo nashto<\/em>, a situation when the <em>karaka<\/em> of a thing is found in the house of that same thing. Venus associates with Mercury and is aspected by Jupiter. It also associates with the Sun and the dark Moon (malefic in this phase), and is aspected by Saturn. So, this is shaky rather than steady.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ali-punch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2861\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ali-punch.jpg\" alt=\"ali-punch\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the <em>dasha<\/em> sequence, we must always note the star-lords of the period lords, for the latter are just employees working for the boss who owns the <em>nakshatra<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ali was born in Moon <em>dasha<\/em>. The Moon is <em>swa nakshatra<\/em> (its own star), so it works for itself. <em>Lagnesh<\/em> Moon in the 7th invokes outreach, travel, conflict and relationships. But Ali saw only the last three years of Moon <em>dasha<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then came Mars <em>dasha<\/em>, age three to 10. Mars is strong and works for Ketu, who provokes crises and reversals and frustration. Meanwhile Mars also labors on his own behalf \u00e2\u0080\u0093 commanding center stage in the 10th, stimulating the body and the persona, cultivating an aggressive showmanship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rahu <em>dasha<\/em> (1952-1970, age 10-28) works for its sign-lord the Sun, who occupies the 7th. Rahu also works for its star-lord Venus, retrograde in the 7th. The Sun and Venus are both involved in several yogas from the 7th. This focuses an 18-year <em>dasha<\/em> on 7th house themes of relationships and \u00e2\u0080\u009cwar\u00e2\u0080\u009d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/young-Ali.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2863\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/young-Ali-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"young Ali\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a>Ali began learning to box at age 12, in Rahu-Rahu. He had his professional debut in Rahu-Mercury. As <em>bhukti<\/em> lord, Mercury works for the Moon in the 7th, while Mercury itself is in the 7th. He converted to Islam in the same <em>bhukti<\/em>. Mercury\u00e2\u0080\u0099s not considered a spiritual planet, yet in Ali\u00e2\u0080\u0099s chart it\u00e2\u0080\u0099s associated with or aspected by all three <em>sattvik<\/em> planets \u00e2\u0080\u0093 Sun, Moon and Jupiter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At age 22, during Rahu-Venus, Ali fought Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title. In the same <em>bhukti<\/em>, they fought a rematch, and Ali won both times. During its <em>bhukti<\/em>, Venus works for its star-lord Mars. Mars is the <em>karaka<\/em> of the warrior, and the strongest planet in the chart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By the mid-Sixties, the Vietnam War was at its peak. Previously deferred from the draft, Ali was called up but refused to go, declaring himsself a conscientious objector. Not only that, he used his sound bite to protest the entire plight of blacks in America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e2\u0080\u009cI ain\u00e2\u0080\u0099t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong,\u00e2\u0080\u009d he famously said. \u00e2\u0080\u009cThey never called me nigger, never lynched me, didn\u00e2\u0080\u0099t put no dogs on me, didn\u00e2\u0080\u0099t rob me of my nationality, rape and kill my mother and father.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He was running Rahu-Sun. The Sun in its own <em>nakshatra<\/em> works for itself alone. The Sun is the <em>atma<\/em>, or soul. It is also a <em>kshatriya<\/em> planet posited in a <em>kendra<\/em> where it manifests as leadership. It can also indicate a man of principles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ali was the most explicitly black athlete of the last 60 years, and the most political, and it remains astounding. He surrendered three years in the prime of his career and risked imprisonment over what he believed was an unjust war. He risked life as the biggest athlete on earth to tell the US government that Vietnam was an atrocity, and so was America\u00e2\u0080\u0099s treatment of its black people. [Bruce Arthur, <em>The Toronto Star<\/em>, 4 June 2016]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ali was fined and sentenced, released on bail, but stripped of his passport, boxing titles and license. He did not fight from March 1967 to October 1970, more than three years in the very prime of his physical life. This banishment ran all of Rahu-Moon and Rahu-Mars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <em>lagnesh<\/em> Moon is <em>swa nakshatra<\/em>, and here we have Ali\u00e2\u0080\u0099s dark night of the soul, where he has lost contact with the public, and indeed a part of himself. Mars works for Ketu, who occupies the 8th of reversals and represents Saturn blocking Mars in the 10th<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Ali-paintingfinger.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2864\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Ali-paintingfinger-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ali-paintingfinger\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Jupiter <em>dasha<\/em> (1970-1986, age 28-44) works for its star-lord the Moon, who also occupies the 7th. Jupiter also acts for itself, retrograde in the 11th.
