Just as there are shades of grey between black and white, so thinking can vary in its quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Certain objects give us pleasure. Therefore, we like to acquire them and keep them. Other objects give us pain. Therefore, we seek to get rid of them and thereafter avoid them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This applies to other things \u00e2\u0080\u0093 relationships, places, emotional states. This dynamic governs all our activities. We seek what we enjoy, we avoid what we don\u00e2\u0080\u0099t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He tells us the story of Rishi Valnikirya and his wife Mitra (Maitrayi). Well-to-do, the rishi received gifts of cows from wealthy patrons, which he in turn distributed to those in need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At age 60, he told his wife that it was time for him to withdraw even further from worldly life and seek a greater understanding of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a general rule, we should always change for the better, not for the worse. We should aspire to a higher order. We should not backslide to a lower state. If we are to evolve, we have to keep moving in the right direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His wife then asked that, if he was leaving all his wealth to her for the pursuit of something higher, she wanted to know whether she might pursue it too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He was pleased with her maturity of thought and began to discuss the notion of the <em>atma<\/em>. He asked her what she liked and she said there are so many things \u00e2\u0080\u0093 our children, parents, house, wealth, neighbors, country, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2976\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-127-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"india_2005-127\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-127-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-127-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-127-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-127.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>This leads to the idea that husband and wife love each other, not for the sake of the other, but for the good feeling it gives them. This is most obvious when we think of someone who loves God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Possessions make us feel good and comfortable, but not necessarily happy. The psychiatrist\u00e2\u0080\u0099s couch is comfortable but it\u00e2\u0080\u0099s not a happy place to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Throughout our lives, we are constantly adjusting things around us \u00e2\u0080\u0093 objects, circumstances, people, etc \u00e2\u0080\u0093 in an effort to feel more comfortable where we are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Basically, we attempt to feel comfortable wherever we are, but the more fundamental task is to feel comfortable within ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But instead of constantly trying to adjust all of those things outside us, we should turn our direction inward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All experience is centred upon \u00e2\u0080\u009cI\u00e2\u0080\u009d, which is the locus of all relationships. \u00e2\u0080\u009cI\u00e2\u0080\u009d am the center of this worldly life, the center of this limited consciousness, the focal point of this life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even the body is \u00e2\u0080\u009cmine\u00e2\u0080\u009d like all the other objects in my universe. But just as these objects are not \u00e2\u0080\u009cme\u00e2\u0080\u009d, neither is the body \u00e2\u0080\u009cme\u00e2\u0080\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0Swamis and sadhus successfully objectify this notion by saying that \u00e2\u0080\u009cthis body is hungry.\u00e2\u0080\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We must adopt the notion of the witness. The body does things of which the Self becomes witness \u00e2\u0080\u0093 feelings, thoughts, actions.\u00c2\u00a0Therefore, even these more subtle things like emotions and thoughts that that arise from the body\/mind\/ego complex are \u00e2\u0080\u009cmine\u00e2\u0080\u009d but not \u00e2\u0080\u009cme\u00e2\u0080\u009d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2977\" src=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-155-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"india_2005-155\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-155-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-155-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-155-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.navamsa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/India_2005-155.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The process of witnessing the body\u00e2\u0080\u0099s spectrum of functions is called \u00e2\u0080\u009c<em>Viveka<\/em>\u00e2\u0080\u009d and is the distinction between the seer and the seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Returning to the story of the rishi\u00e2\u0080\u00a6 he told his wife that he wanted to understand the witness \u00e2\u0080\u0093 the <em>atma<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is not enough to have information, to know something. It is necessary to assimilate it and own it. For this reason, the rishi declared it a proper goal to pursue this path in order to eliminate unhappiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Think of two people singing in the shower \u00e2\u0080\u0093 one for happiness, the other out of happiness.
