\"chicago-trading-pits\"<\/a>WASHINGTON, (AFP) – A longer ring finger than an index finger denotes a more successful financial trader, British researchers said in a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Previous research found that the length ratio between the index finger and the ring finger, termed 2D:4D, is a measure of prenatal exposure to androgens (male hormones) that can affect the developing brain giving it increased confidence and reaction times.<\/span><\/p>\n

[Just to be clear, the ring finger is a marker for male hormones (androgens) such as testosterone<\/em>. On the other hand\u00c2\u00a0— no, just kidding, on the same hand — the index finger marks\u00c2\u00a0the female hormone estrogen<\/em>. Males typically have longer ring fingers than women because they were exposed to more testosterone in the womb. But even among men we\u00c2\u00a0can observe different hormonal levels, ie, some men can be more masculine\u00c2\u00a0or feminine than others. This applies in many\u00c2\u00a0departments of life, with career\u00c2\u00a0being just one facet.]<\/span><\/p>\n

University of Cambridge researcher and chief author of the study John Coates said androgens improve the concentration and reflexes needed in high-end financial trading.<\/span><\/p>\n

In their study, researchers measured the fingers of 44 male traders in the City of London who were engaged in trading that involved rapid decision-making and quick physical reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note<\/span>: “winner” and “loser” in the hands above are relative terms not intended to be taken literally, but simply to suggest the bias for financial performance revealed in the specific study.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

They then correlated finger length ratio to the traders’ profits and losses during the preceding 20 months, concluding that a lower 2D:4D ratio predicted higher long-term profitability and longer careers in the business.<\/span><\/p>\n

[In other words, the longer the 4D ring finger in comparison to the 2D index finger, the more testosterone, and the greater financial success.]<\/span><\/p>\n

“The success and persistence of traders exposed to high levels of prenatal androgens suggests that financial markets may be influenced by traders’ biological traits,” the researchers said in the study.<\/span><\/p>\n
