Every time a journalist asks Gavin Newsom whether he’ll present himself as a Presidential candidate in the current primaries/election cycle, he says that he won’t contest incumbent President Biden. Like many a politician, Newsom has evidently mastered the art of answering a question in a diplomatic way without actually slamming the door shut on any issue.

Last month, Newsom met GOP Presidential wannabe Ron DeSantis in a televised debate hosted by Sean Hannity on Fox News, which lived up to its promise as a smack-down clash of culturally-opposite figureheads. Newsom is a proponent of liberal legislation, whether in support of legal cannabis, LGBTQ rights, or sanctuary policies for fresh immigrants and women seeking a right of choice outside their anti-abortionist home states, of which there are many in the USA. DeSantis, on the other hand, leans far right on most issues, whether they involve an anti-woke agenda, gun ownership, immigration crackdowns or other tough-love policies favored by most Republicans.

Some have speculated that this televised debate was instigated as an opportunity for senior Democrat leadership, indeed America itself, to observe Newsom on a public stage taking on DeSantis. The two often disparage the other’s governing of their respective states, and their ideological differences make them appropriate avatars for an equally-divided American electorate. Meanwhile, this may have been more than just a token gesture of political rivalry. If Donald Trump succumbs under the weight of the four indictments and 91 charges currently hanging over him, DeSantis may become the GOP’s default candidate. In a parallel scenario, if Joe Biden’s hearing aid is turned up high enough, he may hear the growing chorus of Americans who say he’s too old for the job, and may step aside in favor of Newsom.

Now, the question du jour is, does Newsom have what it takes to lead America?

Luckily, unlike the case of Ron DeSantis whose birthtime is unknown, Astrodienst (Astro.com) tells us Gavin Newsom was born at 5:13 AM on October 10, 1967, in San Francisco.

He grew up in an upper/middle-class family whose parents divorced when he was a boy, and he worked several jobs in high school to help support his mother and siblings. He struggled with dyslexia throughout his school years, but attended university on a partial baseball scholarship until he threw his arm out and never played again.

He and some associates started a business in wine retail which grew to a significant enterprise in northern California until he sold his share when elected mayor of San Francisco in 2004, a position he held for two terms. He was elected lieutenant-governor of California in 2014, after which he was elected Governor in 2018, and again in 2022. Under his watch, California legalized cannabis, ensured rights for the LGBTQ community, instituted police and judicial reforms, and in 2020 dealt with both the Covid outbreak and a horrendous wildfire season.

In his horoscope, the most commanding feature is a Ruchaka yoga formed by Mars in its own sign Scorpio in the 4th house. Mars is one of the kshatriya grahas, a significator of the command-and-control ruling class, as in kings, commanders, political leaders, CEOs, and so on. Jupiter and Venus, the two representatives of the brahmin caste (custodians of art, culture, law and religion) occupy the lagna. Aside from being benefics, their virtue in this horoscope is that they form a true Raja yoga – 5th lord Jupiter with 10th lord Venus – a classic signature for government and high office. Jupiter’s digbala lends the yoga strength.

Aside from that, yogas are scant in this chart. The Sun and Saturn in mutual aspect form a Dharma-Karma Adhipati yoga, since the Sun is lagnesh while a strong (Rx) Saturn is the 7th lord. Their axis through the 2nd and 8th houses creates both problems and opportunities. Aside from his early family and educational challenges, Newsom has admitted to some problems with alcohol, and also had an affair with a staff member when he was mayor of San Francisco. He was married to Kimberly Guilfoyle (now Donald Trump Jr’s main squeeze) but divorced in 2006. He has since married film director Jennifer Siebel with whom he has four children.

Fast forward to the present day, Newsom is now running Jupiter-Venus, the very two planets that form the Raja yoga in his ascendant. Hence, he is currently in perhaps one of the most opportune political windows of his life. Meanwhile, transiting Saturn is in his 7th house, aspecting both his 4th house and its lord Mars. If nothing else, this constitutes something of a challenge regarding his moral and/or professional responsibility to step up to the plate, and seize the day.

Now we’ll just have to wait and see if Joe Biden will pass the Democrat’s torch to Newsom.
